New Gender Action Link: Gender, IFIs and Indigenous Rights

New Gender Action Link: Gender, IFIs and Indigenous Rights

Gender Action is pleased to announce the publication of its fifth "Gender Action Link", Gender, IFIs and Indigenous Rights, which highlights how IFI investments often have negative impacts upon indigenous communities, especially indigenous women.

As indigenous women are often amongst the most marginalized of groups, the Link examines how IFI projects and policies affect both indigenous men and women differently. In particular, the Link illustrates the common harmful impacts of IFI investments on indigenous women including the destruction of local economies and livelihoods, forced displacement and increased discrimination and gender-based violence. IFIs must take into account the potential damaging impacts investments may have and promote a gender-balanced approach that considers gender issues unique to indigenous communities. The Link also illustrates how both indigenous men and women have contributed to gender justice movements locally, regionally and internationally. Additionally, the Link provides resources and suggestions concerning IFI investments and their effects upon indigenous communities.

This brief, reader-friendly resource is part of a Gender Action Links series that has included Links on gender, international finance and climate change; extractive industries; illegitimate debt; and commercial banks. Future Links will address topics such as reproductive health, HIV/AIDS and more. This timely series aims to link international finance-watcher and gender justice communities through key thematic briefings, concrete case examples, useful action resources and partnership opportunities. Further information and previous Links can be found in Gender Action's vital and frequently updated Gender Toolkit for International Finance Watchers, a publication which assists civil society groups in incorporating gender perspectives into their work. Gender Action Links link up gender justice groups and international finance-watchers so we can multiply our impact!
